Me

My name is Aleksanteri Karanka though people usually call me saska. I was born in 1991 in Tampere, Finland, where I’m still living to this day.

I've worked as a full-time designer for ~year. Before that I worked as a full-stack developer (ranging from WordPress to mobile app development) for ~five years. In 2022 I also became a certified Web Accessibility Specialist .

At the moment (January 2023) I'm happily employed at Vincit as a UI Designer / Accessibility Expert.

Background

I was tasked to create a logo for an ad-hoc online esport event that was conceived as a substitute for in-person events due to COVID-19 pandemic. Though the event was a part of S.A.M.E, a European circuit of online Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments, the event also needed a visual identity of its own. Smash Sauna Online was organized by Smash Finland ry and Tr3 Gamers ry.

Considerations

When thinking about appeal of any competition event, one of the more important aspects is the perceived prestige of the event. So how do we make a brand new all-online tournament with no physical interactions and no physical trophies feel prestigious? As a logo designer I wanted to create a logo that contributes to solving that problem.

Result

Emblem logos with bold outlines and blocky typography is a common trope in esports that is utilised to make it easily recognisable as being associated with that field. The central element, sauna pail, is an allusion to a cup (as in a trophy) which, having depth in both dimension and color, feels like a concrete and real physical object. Real for a logo that is. The point is, this aims to add perceived realness, importance and prestige to the image of the whole event.
